Getting Our Star Back

From L to R: Chelsea Holsinger, Bob Speelman, Emmanuel Damson

November 9, 2017

NOTE: This story was originally posted on the blog of Bob Speelman, owner of Highbanks Care Center. Each week Bob goes to one of his facilities and works as a nursing assistant to better understand his company's motto - "Supporting Superior Care."

I had the most amazing time today working at Highbanks Care Center, our 56-bed nursing home in North Columbus. Chelsea Holsinger is the Administrator at Highbanks, and her and her wonderful team are making a huge difference! You get a warm feeling from everyone (staff and residents) the minute you walk through the front door. It’s easy to understand why Highbanks is rated as a five star facility with the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services!

I worked with Emmanuel Damson, and he is simply the most incredible person. I don’t really know how else to put it. Emmanuel is a nursing assistant at Highbanks. I worked alongside him and was immediately struck by how the residents and their family members had such affection for him. The moment he entered the room, they would smile and were happy to see him. His compassion for the residents, and the pride he took in his job, was simply heartwarming. Emmanuel is a born leader. Chelsea said that “whenever he runs into a problem, he takes the initiative to come up with a solution, rather than complaining.” While we were talking, Emmanuel said, “I’m very proud of Highbanks and the care we give here. I’m proud of our Star Rating. In fact, a few years ago when we dropped to a four star rating, I asked the staff in a meeting, what are we going to do to get our star back?”

Now that’s leadership!

Emmanuel has a 27-year-old son, a 21-year old daughter, and his youngest daughter is a senior in High School. Emmanuel’s wife works at Nationwide Children’s Hospital here in Columbus. They are actively involved in their church. Emmanuel was born in Ghana, moved to Germany for four years, then came to the U.S. and ultimately settled in Columbus in 1998. He loves the U.S. and is thankful for the opportunities this country has given him.

Emmanuel, thank you for allowing me to work with you today. You are an amazing person and we are so fortunate to have an employee like you on our team.

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

- William Arthur Ward

Emmanuel, you are a GREAT Teacher. You inspired me today and for that I will forever be grateful!
